After much ruminating - we knew we had to build a 2 story house and give up on the idea that a west facing lot down in a hole could ever have southern exposure that would really matter.

Joe worked in Sketchup to change the roof line and place the house on the lot. After playing with the sun angles and overhangs, we decided that tipping the roof didn't help that much and it lost some of the modern lines of the house.
