We learned about egg paint, milk paint, and clay paint. While we probably won't make our own paints -- there are some natural finishes that we may use.
Venetian plaster - may be a good alternative to normal drywall and paint finishing. It eliminates all the sanding on the interior walls.
Raw linseed oil is a good choice for wood finishes. Do not use the boiled oil as it has toxic drying agents. Here's a source for the product:

For wood finishes - can also use a mixture of beeswax, salt, apple cider vinegar and walnut oil.
To experiment with coloring paint or wood stain, use iron oxide (or any of the pigments used for pottery) as a color.
