We originally wanted a single story home. It's hard to fit everything we want for space in a small footprint. Our current house has an upstairs story with a loft, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and a bonus room all under the roof trusses that go down to the floor. All the rooms have an "attic" feel. It was a very cost effective way to build a second story.
We worked through a number of smaller two story plans. This is our favorite:
Update on March 16 - We decided to stick with the original single story. The second story adds a shed dormer which complicates the building envelope and air sealing work.
