Lessons from Frank Lloyd Wright

A few years ago, we visited Taliessen, Wright's home in Spring Green Wisconsin.   In May of 2013, we stayed at the Seth Peterson Cottage on Mirror Lake - just outside of Wisconsin Dells.

We would like our new house to be a little bit "Frank" in the following ways:
1.  Strong connection between inside and outside - carry the flooring and the ceiling into the outdoor space.
2.  Make the corners disappear - put the windows as close to the corners as possible.
3.  Prairie style in trim, cabinetry, and overall feel of the house.
4.  Wide overhangs to shelter the house - and a low pitch roof.
5.  A difficult site makes it more interesting.  The building should be part of the site - not just set on top of it.  Put the structure into the "brow of the hill", make it part of the hill.
6.  Clean and simple lines.
7.  A trim board that runs at the top of all the windows and doors (inside and out).
8.  Usonian - A house should be simple and affordable -- the opposite from all the mansions we see springing up on area lakes.
9.  Use of simple natural materials - including stained concrete floors.
10. A recurring theme or shape in the house that ties it all together.

Here's some photos from our stay at the Seth Peterson Cottage:

The house extends out to the porch.
Frank was never much for kitchens - although small, this was very efficient.

The living room centers around the hearth - with built in furniture.

The bedroom is at the back of the house with small windows to let in natural light.  It was small and cozy - simple sleeping space.
